If You Have THIS on Your Tongue… It Could Mean Something Important

Many people ignore changes on their tongue. But doctors say your tongue can reveal early signs about your overall health.

Here are some common tongue changes — and what they may mean

1White Coating on the Tongue

A thick white layer may be caused by:

• Poor oral hygiene
• Dry mouth
• Smoking
• Fungal infection like Oral thrush

Oral thrush happens when yeast overgrows in the mouth, especially in seniors, diabetics, or people using antibiotics.

2 Bright Red, Smooth Tongue

If your tongue looks unusually red and shiny, it could signal:

• Vitamin B12 deficiency
• Iron deficiency
• Folate deficiency

Low B12 levels may also cause fatigue, weakness, or tingling in the hands and feet.

3 Yellowish Tongue

This can happen because of:

• Bacteria buildup
• Smoking
• Poor hydration

Sometimes it improves simply by brushing your tongue and drinking more water.

4 Dark or “Hairy” Tongue

A black or brown hairy-looking tongue may look scary, but it’s usually harmless. It can be linked to:

• Smoking
• Antibiotic use
• Poor oral hygiene

The condition is often called Black hairy tongue.

5Painful Sores or Patches

Recurring sores might be:

• Canker sores
• Irritation from dentures
• Stress-related
